Zakat refers to giving a certain amount of your wealth to the poor. Allah says in the Quran: “Of their wealth take alms so that thou mightest purify and sanctify them” (9:103). Alms refers to wealth given to the poor, whereas zakat refers to wealth that is given to the poor as well as other purposes. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Zakat is obligatory on Muslims who meet the following requirements: - (1) Being a Muslim; - (2) Being an adult; - (3) Being sane; - (4) Being of sound mind; - (5) Possessing wealth.
